Christmas is edging closer and it’s time to start thinking about gifts to get for friends and family. If you’re having trouble deciding what to get for a guitarist friend or you just want ideas for what to ask for yourselves, then check out this list of twenty of the best (and worst!) stocking fillers for musicians.
The list is ordered by level of ridiculousness and outright stupidity, so stick to the top half if you’re after a genuinely useful gift, or plunge down to the bottom if you’re really after something of a more novelty value. Nothing in the list is prohibitively expensive; these are all definitely Xmas stocking filler material!
If the images are a little small give them a click and they will grow before your very eyes.
Why settle for the same old plain, boring picks that every other guitarist uses when you can design your own? Check out any custom pick website (e.g. Clayton Custom) to create your very own, one of a kind picks!
These would make a great cost-effective marketing tool at your next gig!
Just as with picks, your guitar strap can also be a great place to express your individuality or even to promote your band’s website! Take a look at custom guitar strap sites such as StrapGraphics.com and get creative!
Why not treat yourself or a loved one to a year’s subscription of their favourite guitar magazine? Paying for an annual subscription or setting up a direct debit will usually save you up to 30% on the cover price, and you generally get a free gift as a thank you. I recently subscribed to a magazine in the UK and got a free pedal which paid for 6 months of magazines once I’d sold it
Help your favourite guitar hero stand out at their next gig via the help of some wicked guitar bling accessories! How about these fretboard LED lights from FretLord which will light up your fretboard in a variety of different colors for only $10? Great for those gigs that are just that little bit too dark! Or perhaps some crazy new evil skull volume/tone knobs or even a simple pick holder?
The first multi-tool for guitars and basses that’s actually useful, without unnecessary gimmicks. Whether you have a USA or imported axe, this tool has got you covered for most bridge, truss rod, and other adjustments. Includes four metric and three fractional hex keys, two Phillips screwdrivers, a 2.5mm slotted screwdriver, and ruler for setting action. Truss rod sizes are ball-end for easy access. All keys are pro-grade, using heat-treated S2 material with a polished chrome finish.
A must for any guitar player’s toolbox!
Although it certainly wouldn’t be a great idea to give your loving wife a bottle of bleach for Xmas, giving your favourite musician a set of cleaning products could make a fantastic gift!
Help them keep their instrument in tip top condition with a complete cleaning set such as this maintenance kit from Ernie Ball which includes wipes for every scenario.
If you know what style of music your friend plays then why not pick them up a selection of different picks to experiment with. Head down to your local music store and ask for $20 worth of picks which might be suitable for their play style.
I am constantly on the look-out for better and better picks as they can make such a huge difference to your playing ability. Take a look through the Reviews section on LeftyFretz to read about a few of the cool plectrum designs we’ve tried.
Let’s face it, storing your guitars on stands on the floor is just asking for trouble, so why not pick up a few wall hangers and keep your babies out of harms way?
If you’re feeling especially adventurous check out our review of these Woodies invisible wall hangers from WiaMusic!
If you don’t want to pay someone else to make custom picks for you then why not try your hand at creating your own?
You could craft your own with a pair of scissors and some old plastic but why make things difficult? The pick punch creates plectrums from old credit cards and other bits of plastic you can find lying around.
Check out our Pick Punch Review to see what we thought of this great little gadget!
Grab some custom graphic vinyl decals to really give your guitar an individual look! A full body decal can very cheaply give your guitar a completely new look and is very simple to install.
See how I got on with my Zack Wylde Bullseye decal last year!
This one’s for all the true guitar geeks out there – a computer mouse modelled on a Boss DS-1! Boss sold these in very limited numbers on their website earlier this year and they sold out almost instantly, so your best bet for one of these bad boys would most likely be eBay. Cool? Hell yeah! Practical? Hmmmm…
If you are just as skilled in the kitchen as you are on the guitar then you may love this guitar shaped chopping board. Keep up with your chops when you’re away from the guitar!
See what I did there?
This t-shirt includes some clever inbuilt circuitry which makes the guitar print completely playable! The sounds are recorded from a real guitar and it even comes with a mini amp which you can strap to your jeans pocket! A specially designed magnetic pick will activate the sounds upon strumming.
Wonder if it comes in a left handed version… Shunned again eh lefties?
They are currently working on a version with mixing decks instead of the guitar. It’s for girls only… nicely shaped girls…who are a little slutty.
The perfect ornament for your car’s dashboard! Pay homage to your favourite musicians with one of these fun bobble head designs.
Several artists are available including Hendrix, Elvis, Bob Marley and Jim Morrison. I even spotted a Joe Bonamassa model on Joe’s website recently!
Why not create the ultimate super-group out of bobbleheads?
These Jimi Hendrix pillows would look ace in anybody’s guitar room!
If you find these a little too garish then maybe you could settle for a framed poster of your favorite artist or band – a little more tasteful no doubt! eBay is a great place to find mounted gold cds/records from your favorite bands, often times with the band members’ signatures.
Here’s something for the ladies! Why not pick up some guitar related jewellery for your favourite rock goddess. Perhaps these music earrings are a little over the top but how about a much more tasteful necklace? For that more personal touch try making your own, grab some string, some old credit cards and the pick punch above!
Available in almost any guitar design, these novelty pens will make a fun and cheap addition to any musician’s Xmas stocking!
A great conversation starter the next time you have to sign your life away. Also great for those ‘playing the world’s smallest violin’ moments…
Did anyone else notice that the bass guitar pen is the only lefty? I’m sad like that…
Starting to scrape the barrel a little now aren’t we? Ah hell, it might look not too out of place in your guitar room above your tie-dye couch complete with Jimi Hendrix pillows right?
A more innovative idea would have been to use an actual model guitar and have the tremolo arm as the hour hand! Sure you’d have to guess at the minutes, but us guitarists are a laid back bunch, who cares right?
Um…why not right? Just make sure you don’t get one with a whammy bar … actually, thinking about it, why would that make it weird!? It’s a freaking guitar shaped toilet seat…
Also available in acoustic flavor for those who like a more laid back, mellow toilet seat.
I know what you’re thinking – surely it doesn’t get any more tatty than this? Well you haven’t seen number 20 yet, it definitely takes the biscuit…
Ooookay, I think we’ll wrap this article up now before I start losing your respect … wait … what do you mean you left after the guitar pens!?
So there you have it folks – the useful, the novelty, and the downright ridiculous stocking fillers for your guitarist friends. Choose wisely and have a great Xmas!
